Live theatre has a unique way of bringing well-known stories to life, and the stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games does exactly that. Known worldwide through the bestselling books and the film series starring Jennifer Lawrence, the story of Panem and its brutal arena competition has been transformed into a thrilling, live theatrical experience.
The show is held at the Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre, right in the heart of Canary Wharf, London. We arrived around 6:15 pm for the 7:30 pm show.
While we didnt have time for a pre-show meal, the area has lots of great options:
Mildreds on the Wharf a menu inspired by The Hunger Games On Stage!
Songbird Restaurant & Bar right near the theatre and perfect for pre-show dining.
For ease of travel, the theatre is ideal for coach trips as there is a bus stop around the corner, but if youre driving, Canada Square Car Park is just around the corner. The theatre itself is purpose-built, welcoming and fully themed with a giant Mockingjay outsideit immediately sets the scene for an immersive experience.
The venue is modern, opened in October 2025 and designed to make the audience feel part of the action. The layout is dark-themed with red and black tones, giving it a dramatic, immersive feel. Seating: All seats are excellent, divided into districts, with Districts 1 & 2 actually moving during certain scenes to offer different viewing anglesmaking the arena feel even bigger!
Facilities: Cloakroom available, bars on both ground and first floors, and plenty of merchandise like t-shirts, pins, and tote bags.
Accessibility: Lifts and accessible seating available.
Seeing such a famous story performed live was incredible. The stage version focuses more on tension and emotion between the characters rather than cinematic effects. Clever staging, lighting and movement recreate the arena and action in a way that feels immediate and personal. The middle of the stage even lowers and rises to bring in new sets, and the train sequence was especially impressive with its costumes and props. The action is exciting yet family-friendly, so its suitable for children as well. The moving districts and audience interactionespecially from Caesar and the Capitol citizensmake you feel like part of Panem itself.
Some of my personal highlights included:
The Reaping: When Primrose Everdeens name is drawn, the theatre falls silentthen Katniss shouts, I volunteer!
The Capitol Demonstration: Katniss fires an arrow straight into the apple in the pigs mouth.
The Emotional Moments: Peeta reveals his love for Katniss during the Capitol interview, and Katniss sings to Rue as she diesheart-wrenching and unforgettable.
Katniss, Peeta, and Rue stood out and the interactions with the audience made the show feel immersive and memorable. Even though Id seen the film, I was surprised at how differently some scenes were presented on stage. Each adaptationfrom book to film to theatreoffers a fresh perspective, which makes the live experience even more exciting.
The audience was fully engaged, with prompts for applause and laughter, creating a lively and participatory environment. The show felt intense, emotional, and exciting, and watching it live made the story feel even more gripping.
Canary Wharf is a great area for a full night out. You can grab a pre-show meal at Songbird, or try Dishoom, Caravan, or The Ivy in the Park. After the show, the bars and waterside spots are perfect for a post-show drink, making it a great destination for an evening trip or even an overnight stay in London.
This show is perfect for:
Fans of The Hunger Games films or books who want to see the story brought to life in a new way.
Theatre lovers who enjoy creative, immersive productions with strong storytelling.
Anyone looking for something a little different from the usual musicals or classic plays.
The theatre is easy to get to, the surrounding area has great dining and drinks, and the show itself is unique, immersive and family-friendly. The moving districts, clever stage effects, and audience interaction make this a theatrical experience that stands out from the rest.
What I loved most was the moving districts, which gave us new perspectives throughout the show, the layout of the theatre itself, including the bars and restaurants nearby. Even with low expectationsI hadnt seen the film in yearsthe show exceeded them, bringing the story vividly to life. I would definitely go again, and Id recommend it to anyonenot just Hunger Games fans. Its a really cool, immersive experience that makes for a memorable London theatre trip.
