It is a stunning sea landscape of sandy beaches, inlets and hidden coves where the historic smuggler knew how to navigate the tides over the flat waterways and evade the 18th Century customs men as they smuggled in brandy, gin and even soap. There are tales of intrigue, ghosts and romance as the flat nature of Essex made it the perfect venue for the smuggler of old.
Along the way we see the beautiful water aspect of Essex. We start the morning at Abberton Visitor Centre which has stunning views over the reservoir. There is a tea room and shop on site, or you may prefer to walk to one of their bird hides.
From Abberton we continue our tales tour to Maldon’s scenic Hythe Quay with its collection of Thames Barges.
Our final visit of the day will be Battlesbridge Antiques Centre which is home to approximately 70 dealers selling their antiques housed in a collection of historic buildings on the banks of the River Crouch.
