Morning collection from home to join the coach for the leisurely drive to Stamford. Admire beautiful scenery and discover the old world charm of this beautifully preserved Georgian stone town were many of the buildings are constructed from old Lincolnshire limestone. After lunch, we continue to our hotel late afternoon, with welcome tea/coffee on arrival.D
After breakfast we journey to the National Coal Mining Museum for England, a unique place where the history of mining over several centuries is not only preserved but brought vividly to life with the sights, sounds and smells of a working coal mine. You canhave the opportunity to travel 140m underground with one of the ex-miners to experience the life of a coal miner. Back on the surface, you can see pit ponies, galleries and exhibits. This afternoon we continue for a brief visit to the nearby Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the UK’s leading open air gallery where you can discover work
by British and international artists.
Today we enjoy a visit to Elsecar Heritage Centre, set in a historic village surrounded by beautiful countryside where an industrial dynasty was built. Come and discover the stories of the powerful Earls Fitzwilliam and see remarkable heritage and architecture from a great industrial age. Stunning ironworks and workshops, which began life in the 1790’s, have been transformed into this bustling attraction, packed with shops, cafés, and antiques plus a steam railway and the oldest steam engine in the world. Later we journey back to Sheffield to discover Sheffield Botanical Gardens with over 15 different garden areas featuring a collection of over 5,500 species of plants from around the world. Originally laid out in 1836, the gardens are listed by English Heritage as a Grade II listed site and contain a number of listed buildings, including the stunning glass pavilions.B, D
We depart our hotel after breakfast and travel tothe National Memorial Arboretum. Set in 150 acres of beautiful wooded parkland and gardens with 50,000 maturing trees and over 300 unique memorials, theNational Memorial Arboretum is a beautiful and lasting tribute to those who serve their country or who have died in conflict. It is home to the striking Armed Forces Memorial, the relocated and rededicated Basra Memorial Wall and the Royal British Legion’s Never Forget Memorial whose centre point is a beautiful poppy wreath around which Everlasting Poppies are planted. Rich in design and symbolism, and sympathetic to the lush gardens they inhabit, the memorials each have fascinating stories to explore. Later we continue our journey home returning to East Anglia during the early evening for our door to door service to your home.B
